Controversial Supreme Court lawyer Nitin Meshram who appeared for child rapist has been facing backlash for a tweet in which he said that Upanayana ceremony must be made a criminal offense as it violates the Indian Constitution.
Nitin Meshram was responding to a tweet of a Twitterati named Rupa Murthy who had shared a picture of her son’s Upanayana ceremony.
Upanayanam is a Hindu ritual in which a boy is invested with the sacred thread (poonool/janeu) and is initiated to receive Vedic education thereby starting his brahmacharyasrama, the first ashrama of an individual’s life.
It is not just performed by Brahmins but many other Hindu communities.
Last year on this auspicious day of Shankara Jayanti, we performed the Upanayana ceremony of our son Kishan.
Please bless him 🙏 pic.twitter.com/ymoeCBkc24

Responding to the above tweet, Nitin Meshram wrote that “Upanayana violates Articles 15 and 17 of the Constitution and must be made a criminal offense.”
He said that “the moment someone is declared Brahmin, the varna and caste hierarchy begins to reincarnate, which violates the principle of equality under Article 14.”
He went on to even recommend 3 years of rigorous imprisonment and ₹3 lakh.

Many on social media lashed out at the lawyer for his insensitive and outrageous comment.
Upanayan is one of the most important Samskārās. “Upa” means ‘close’ and “Nayanam” means ‘to bring’. Upanayana means to bring closer to the Guru or Divine.

A few others pointed out if he has the galls to go after circumcision ceremony of Muslims since it also professes discrimination against non-Muslims.
People like you @nitinmeshram_ deserve to be shown their place in this country
If you think so why dont you go and file a case and do what is required? Also why dont you voice your opinion similar to this on circumcision which pronounces someone as Muslim, and thus, by Muslim… https://t.co/ZCYXFyXKo3

This is not the first time the radical leftist has courted controversy.
Earlier, he boasted on Twitter that had obtained stay on the death penalty of a child rapist named Firoz and even justified it when critics of the infamous judgement lashed out at him.
Mohamed Firoz had raped a 4-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh in April 2013. The trial court had awarded a death sentence to Firoz. However, it was commutted to a life imprisonment by the Supreme Court saying “every sinner has a future”.
On the other hand, this same Nitin Meshram had advocated death sentence in a similar case where the accused was a Pandit.
Meet lawyer Nitin Meshram:
3/8/2021: Pandit must be hanged to death if found guilty in rape & murder case
21/4/2022: 'Live your life Firoz' as SC commuted his death sentence in 4 year old girl's rape & murder case
If both Pandit & Firoz are guilty, why not demand to hang both? pic.twitter.com/iG5gyoCHR1
