‘Savukku’ Shankar Allegedly Assaulted In Prison, Claims His Lawyer

A Shankar, known as ‘Savukku’ Shankar, a YouTuber and Political commentator, was arrested by cybercrime police in Coimbatore on 4 May 2024. His attorney, Gopalakrishnan, alleges that Shankar was subjected to physical assault by staff at Coimbatore Central Prison.

According to Gopalakrishnan, Shankar’s right hand was fractured during an assault on the night of 4th May 2024, after he was placed in judicial custody, and he was not provided adequate medical care. Gopalakrishnan asserts that approximately ten prison staff members blindfolded Shankar and attacked him with makeshift weapons like pipes, and that Shankar was forced to take painkillers without his consent.

Shankar has been detained until 17 May 2024. Gopalakrishnan stated, “The abuse came to light when I visited Shankar in prison for legal consultation on Monday. A petition has been submitted to the relevant court, emphasizing the mistreatment suffered by Shankar in judicial custody and requesting an investigation into the incident. The petition has been granted, and we anticipate a favorable ruling from the court.” Additionally, Gopalakrishnan has requested that Shankar be transferred to a private hospital for treatment.

Furthermore, Gopalakrishnan disclosed that Senthil Kumar, who was the superintendent of a prison in Cuddalore during Shankar’s previous incarceration, is now the superintendent of Coimbatore Central Prison. “They’ve transferred Shankar to Coimbatore and are subjecting him to torture. Law enforcement officials are motivated by revenge and are mistreating Shankar,” stated the YouTuber’s legal representative, expressing concern for Shankar’s safety.

According to reports, the Coimbatore Cybercrime Police have initiated legal action against a YouTuber for making derogatory remarks about female constables. The YouTuber was apprehended from Theni on 4th May. The Coimbatore City Police confirmed the arrest of Shankar, stating, “Savukku Shankar has been arrested today by Coimbatore city police cyber crime wing for the offences committed under the following sections. 294(b), 509 and 353 IPC r/w section 4 of Tamilnadu prohibition of harassment of Woman Act and section 67 of Information Technology Act,2000.”

In a separate incident, Savukku Shankar, a former vigilance department employee, had previously served a six-month jail term for contempt of court by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. Furthermore, in 2008, he was incarcerated by the DMK government for disclosing a conversation between two senior officials.
