Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Sanavadi party and a former Defence Minister in a coalition government died at the age of 82.
He had been admitted at a private hospital near Delhi for more than a fortnight. He was put in a ventilator, as his condition deteriorated. His son and political successor Akhilesh Yadav, announced his death earlier this morning.
Politicians from across party lines, public figures and members of the public, have poured tributes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tributes with a tweet, remembering numerous meetings with the veteran leader.
“I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and lakhs of supporters. Om Shanti.”
