#ResignStalin Trends As Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy Death Toll Rises To 31

The death toll in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district from consuming illicit liquor has increased to 31, according to media reports. More than 60 individuals have been hospitalized due to the incident.

According to sources, a total of 107 people were admitted to the Kallakurichi Government Medical College Hospital, with 59 being referred to hospitals in other locations such as Salem, Villupuram, and Puducherry. Out of the 29 fatalities, 18 occurred at the Kallakurichi Government Medical Hospital, while the remaining 11 were from other hospitals. Fifteen individuals were admitted to JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research) the previous night. Officials have expressed concern that the death toll may increase.

On Wednesday (19 June 2024) evening, the Tamil Nadu government transferred District Collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath and suspended Superintendent of Police Samay Singh Meena. MS Prasanth has been appointed as the new district collector, and Rajat Chaturvedi as the new Superintendent of Police.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his shock over the deaths and announced that action had been taken against the officials who failed to prevent the incident. “I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in the crime have been arrested, and action has been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it,” Stalin stated on X.

“Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involved in such crimes. Such crimes that ruin society will be suppressed with an iron fist,” he added.

BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai slammed the MK Stalin-led DMK government for failing to curb the menace of illicit liquor calling for the resignation of Prohibition Minister Muthusamy and Gingee Masthan who allegedly shares link with some of the bootleggers in the region.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized the ruling DMK government and called for the resignation of DMK chief and state Chief Minister MK Stalin over the incident.

He expressed that he would not be able to participate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly proceedings commencing today as he will be meeting the families of the victims.

This is not the first instance of spurious liquor deaths ever since the DMK came to power. Last year in May, 22 people died in similar incidents in the Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts. To make things worse, MK Stalin-led DMK government awarded ₹50,000 solatium to the culprit responsible for the hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu which resulted in 19 deaths.

Many on social media have called for the resignation of MK Stalin for the administrative failure and making Tamil Nadu an intoxicated state. A netizen wrote on X “No. 1 CM Stalin. He is the only Chief Minister in the history of Tamil Nadu to see more than 50 deaths due to alcoholism. No.1 Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin.”

In another post, he took a jibe at how the DMK government was banning people from selling coloured cotton candy and parrot fortune-tellers while not banning spurious liquor.

Another netizen called out the stoic silence of alliance parties like the VCK for failing to condemn the hooch tragedy.

BJP Tamil Nadu State Secretary SG Suryah called out alleged ‘actor’ Suriya and his brother Karthi for not uttering a word or expressing condolences over the tragedy. Suriya and his brother Karthi earlier used to virtue-signal on every issue when AIADMK was in power in the state.
