India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday (November 18) inaugurated a revamped war memorial in eastern Ladakh’s Rezang La, the legendary battlefield where Indian troops fought against overwhelming odds against a tide of the Chinese Red Army in 1962.
The memorial is dedicated to the brave Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in the Battle of Rezang La where the legend of Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, PVC (1 December 1924 – 18 November 1962) was forever enshrined in the annals of Indian Military history.
After inaugurating the memorial, the defence minister also held detailed review of the security situation with top Army commanders amid a belligerent China that refuses to ease tension at the Line of Actual Control.
As per reports, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat also accompanied the Defence Minister during his Ladakh visit as Army Chief Gen MM Naravane is on a five-day visit to Israel.
The Indian Army had occupied a number of strategic mountain peaks in the Rezang La region in August last year following China’s attempt to intimidate Indian troops.
