In a sharp exchange, Goa Health Minister and former Congress leader Vishwajit Rane alleged that Rahul Gandhi had once behaved in a highly disrespectful manner toward his mother, Sonia Gandhi. Rane claimed that the Congress MP had stormed into a room and shouted at her, a moment his father, former Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane, personally witnessed.
“My father (former Goa CM Pratapsingh Rane) witnessed how Rahul Gandhi used to scream at ‘madam’ (Sonia Gandhi). I am making a controversial statement but my father was present when Rahul shouted at his mother,” Rane said during a podcast interview, a clip of which was later circulated on X by BJP leader Amit Malviya.
Taking a direct swipe at the Congress leader, Rane argued that someone who cannot show respect to his own mother cannot be expected to respect the nation. “A person who doesn’t even respect his mother, how can we expect him to respect mother India? We never do such things (screaming at parents or elderly),” he remarked.
The minister recounted how disturbed his father had been after witnessing the incident. “When my father came back home, he told us he had never seen Rahul Gandhi act in such a way. It was shocking for him to see a son scream at his own mother,” Rane said in the interview.
Quoting his father further, Rane added, “I don’t know what’s wrong with this boy. He has no manners, no self-control… it’s simply not right.”
When the interviewer pointed out that Rahul Gandhi is often seen treating his mother with respect in public gatherings, Rane retorted, “Showing respect in front of cameras and showing respect at home are two entirely different things.”
These allegations surface just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over remarks involving his late mother, Heeraben Modi. The controversy followed an incident in Darbhanga, Bihar, during Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra, where a video went viral of youngsters shouting abusive slogans against the Prime Minister, including derogatory references to his deceased mother.
