Quad grouping working on safe supply chain for semiconductors to curtail China’s hegemony

In a bid to curtail China’s stronghold over the safe supply chain for semiconductors, leaders of the Quad nations who will be meeting in Washington have agreed to work together and at the same time are looking forward to broadening scope against China in the Indo-Pacific.

Amid the Coronavirus, the Quad may soon work out some resilient, diverse, and secure technology supply chains for hardware, software, and services that are of utmost importance to their national interest, reports Nikkei.

A joint statement provides further details on the common principle to be applied for technological development that states that “the technology needs to be designed and developed in such a manner that it is shaped and shared by the countries on democratic values.”

Even though China is the target, the statement makes no direct mention of the ruthless communist state. However, there is an indirect reference to China’s use of its inappropriate technology and the statement stresses the ongoing challenges regarding illicit transfer and theft of technology which undermines the foundation of technological development.

The statement is very clear in its objective wherein the Quad is looking forward to launching a joint initiative for determining their capacity and identifying their vulnerability in supply chain security for semiconductors.

As of now the US and Japan have only 30% of the chipmaking capacity, while India and Australia do not have any leading chipmakers and India is heavily reliant on China.
