Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta on Tuesday said that more than 60 drone sightings have been reported by the BSF, Punjab Police, and the people of the state over the last 20 months.
“It was in September 2019, that the use of drones for smuggling weapons was first established in Amritsar and since then, such flying machines and delivery platforms are being used frequently for smuggling of drugs and weapons, and now, the terrorist attack in Jammu using a drone has become another major security concern,” said Gupta.
DGP Dinkar Gupta assured full assistance to the Border Security Force (BSF) to counter drone activities at Punjab’s borders, stressing the need for evidence-based and proactive policing.
He also requested that BSF officials share sector-by-sector information of suspected people’s movements with the Punjab Police so that they may maintain a close eye on their activities and take appropriate action against those found to be involved in criminal activity.
The DGP was in Gurdaspur for a high-level meeting with senior Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police officers stationed in the Gurdaspur and Pathankot districts. This was the second high-level meeting presided over by the DGP in the border regions, following the drone attack on the Air Force installation in Jammu on Sunday. Senior officials in attendance were ADGP Internal Security RN Dhoke, IG Border Range SPS Parmar, and DIG BSF Prabhakar Joshi, as well as around 8 BSF Commandants.
