Officials belonging to the TNPCB are investigating a complaint lodged by the public in Erode, who claimed that the water that was flowing in the city’s sewers had suddenly turned red.
There are numerous dye mills and tanneries operating in Agraharam, Periyasemur, Choolai and Thanneerbandal Palayam areas of Erode district. Upon noticing that the sewage water had suddenly turned red, alarmed citizens of the district had lodged a complaint to the government officials citing that the water was that was flowing in the sewer in the area had turned red in colour, and beseeched an immediate investigation into this matter.
Pollution Control Board officials who arrived at the scene looked into this bizarre phenomena and inquired with the dyeing units regarding the same. The discolouration was revealed to have been caused due to the dumping of the dye wastewater, that was found to be let out by the textile units in the region, under the bridge at the waterfront, close to where the sewers started. It is noteworthy that 30 dye mills were sealed following the recent mixing of dye wastewater into a canal in Erode.
After realizing that these factory owners were in direct violation of the norms of the government regarding environmental protection while disposal of their wastewater, over 30 factories were shut down and sealed close by the TNPCB authorities.
