Ma Venkatesan’s Book Titled ‘Dravidian Movement’s Historic Distortions’ Faces Censorship At Chennai Book Fair, Promotional Display Removed, Publisher Under Pressure

The 49th Chennai Book Fair has begun. And not without controversy. This year, writer Ma Venkatesan’s book ‘Historical Distortions of the Dravidian Movement (‘திராவிட இயக்க வரலாற்றுப் புரட்டுகள்’), has been released and is on display and sale at the book fair.

In this regard, promotional material, featuring Venkatesan’s book had been displayed prominently at the frontage of one of the book fair halls.

Soon after the display came up, objections were raised by certain Dravidianists, as shown below.

Following these objections, the banner was covered and removed. The action was carried out by the Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), which organises the Chennai Book Fair. No official explanation was issued by the organisers regarding the decision to remove the display.

The incident has led to criticism from various quarters, with commentators describing the removal as an instance of intolerance towards dissenting viewpoints and raising concerns over freedom of expression at a public literary event.
