Disturbing calls for a military takeover in India have emerged on social media, with supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and activist Sonam Wangchuk urging the Indian Army to intervene and bring about “regime change” on grounds of “humanity.”
An open letter addressed to the Indian Army’s official handle (@adgpi) has gone viral, appealing to the institution to “stand with a man who has always stood by this nation and its soldiers” referring to Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on a hunger strike demanding accountability for India’s students.
The CJP, which gained 22 million Instagram followers within days of being set up and fizzled out in days is demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the leak of question papers for a national medical college entrance examination and leftist anarchist Sonam Wangchuk was ‘helping’ them by going on a hunger strike.
Coup Calls in Public Comments
While the open letter itself appeals to the Army on humanitarian grounds, the comments section has seen alarming calls for unconstitutional action. One user, unofficial_jayk, wrote: “If @indianarmy.adgpi is serious about protecting the country, then they should do a military coup like other countries and take over. Why only face bullets at the border.”
This constitutes a direct and unambiguous call for the Indian Army to overthrow the democratically elected government and seize power – a statement that could attract charges under sedition laws (Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023).
