An Air Force fighter jet crashed in 2016, injuring several people in Balasore, Odisha. Sangeeta Swain of Human Rights Watch, an NGO, had filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission seeking appropriate relief for the victims of the incident.
Following this, the National Human Rights Commission ordered the Indian Air Force to provide relief of ₹ 15 lakh to the victims. The Air Force submitted evidence to the Commission that this amount had been paid. But then it came to light that the relief money was not going to the victims. The Human Rights Commission has therefore ordered the Balasore District Magistrate to inquire into the matter and submit a report inquiring whether the ₹ 15 lakh relief money went to the people.
Investigation into this matter revealed that the victims did not receive the relief in cash, check or bank account in any way. It is unbeknownst as to where the money that was meant for victims actually went. The National Human Rights Commission has now ordered Human Rights Watch NGO to file a case on Sangeeta Swain and take action to recover the money.
