CCTV footage of a gang of five members assaulting a police officer on the open road has gone viral on social media, drawing public criticism about the state’s ability to maintain law and order.
Ashok, a constable at the Astampatti police station in Salem, was on his bike traveling near Chinna Tirupati dressed in Mufti. He noticed three people speeding on a motorcycle and inquired as to why they were speeding. Enraged, the three men and others assaulted Ashok in the open road.
Ashok, who was severely injured, was taken to Salem Government hospital for treatment by local residents. He was later taken to Coimbatore Ganga Hospital for further treatment.
The Astampatti Police Department has filed an FIR in connection with the case and conducted a preliminary investigation. The accused were identified as Abdul Rehman, Rihan Baasha, Aslam Ali, and Rizwan based on CCTV footage. All four were apprehended and later lodged in the Salem jail under judicial custody.
The assault on a police officer has sparked public outrage, with many questioning the state’s law and order situation.
