PM Modi to inaugurate nine new medical colleges in UP, state aims to become hub for medical education and treatment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate nine new medical colleges in the Siddhartha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh (UP), on July 30th, to boost medical education and healthcare.

With the addition of nine new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, the total number of medical colleges in the state would rise to 48. Deoria, Etah, Fatehpur, Ghazipur, Hardoi, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Pratapgarh, and Siddharthnagar are among the districts where new colleges were established. Four new medical colleges will be opened by the end of the year, taking the total number of colleges to 52.

According to the UP state government spokesman, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the administration to complete all necessary arrangements on time as nine medical colleges in nine districts are inaugurated simultaneously making it a historic event.

As of now, 70% of the faculty members have been finalized in these nine new colleges,  and the process for selection of the remaining 30% is presently underway.

Since the BJP took power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, the state has added 36 new medical colleges to its initial count of only 12 medical colleges before CM Yogi assumed office. Adityanath had earlier called for the need of one medical college in each district to prevent patients from travelling to other districts for treatment.

Districts in the state that previously lacked a hospital will now have medical colleges built on a Public-Private-Partnership model in 16 districts, with the goal of making Uttar Pradesh a medical education hub where not only residents of the state but people from all over the world can access a wide range of medical services.

Uttar Pradesh already has four premier medical institutes namely Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Sefai institute, and King George’s Medical University (KGMU).
