Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly endorsed CP Radhakrishnan as a suitable candidate for the post of Vice President of India. Speaking warmly about his longtime acquaintance, PM Modi highlighted Radhakrishnan’s humble beginnings, noting that he hails from an ordinary family and a backward community in Tamil Nadu.
Recalling their early years, the Prime Minister said that both he and Radhakrishnan have grown together over decades, joking about how their hair was black at the time. He emphasized that Radhakrishnan has risen to hold the highest position in the Lok Sabha and is now poised to assume the highest office in the Rajya Sabha.
PM Modi also praised Radhakrishnan’s achievements beyond politics, mentioning that he had been a sportsperson. However, he clarified that Radhakrishnan’s political journey is built on merit and dedication rather than his sporting background, underscoring his suitability for the nation’s second-highest constitutional post.
He said, “Friends, today I am introducing a very old friend of mine. So, I am also happy. It has been so many years, at that time all my hair was black. Radha Krishna ji also had black hair. The Sengol is sitting at the highest position in the Lok Sabha, and it is from Tamil Nadu. Now a son of Tamil Nadu is going to sit on the highest position in the Rajya Sabha. Shriman Radhakrishnan ji is a person from an ordinary family. He has come from a backward society and today he is moving towards a high position in the nation. He has also been a sportsperson. He has not come here because of being a sportsperson. He never played any game in politics.”
Radhakrishnan filed his nomination on 20 August 2025 for the post of Vice President. The Opposition alliance have fielded former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
