The political discourse between Kerala’s two main parties, the CPI(M) and the Congress, had reached a bottom, when Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K Sudhakaran tossed all rules of decency to the wind and called each other names in public.
It all started after KPCC President K Sudhakaran gave an interview to a vernacular weekly in which he alleged that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was the main suspect in the murder of RSS leader Vaadikkal Ramakrishnan and a man named Babu. He also released a copy of the FIR.
On Friday, at the daily media briefing on the status of Covid-19 in the state, Kerala Chief Minister Vijayan claimed that KPCC President Sudhakaran plotted to abduct his children some years ago. “It was timely intelligence supplied by a close friend of Sudhakaran that rescued my children,” Vijayan said, referring to the new KPCC leader as a mafia don.
In response, Sudhakaran stated that Pinarayi was acquitted in the murder of RSS leader Ramakrishnan because no witnesses came forward to testify against him and he was given the benefit of the doubt.
According to K Sudhakaran, this is the first political murder case in Kannur, and CPI(M) workers have killed more than 28 Congress workers in the recent past. The Congress leader said that the Communists had attempted to kill him at least three times before.
Sudhakaran also accused Vijayayan of murdering his own bodyguard, claiming, “Though Babu was a close associate of Vijayayan, they fell apart, and the murder was the fallout of his parting ways.”
Sudhakaran also blamed Vijayan for the attack on Kandoth Gopi, a former beedi worker who had organized a demonstration against the beedi firm. “During the emergency days, I was leading an agitation against the management of a beedi company for its decision to terminate the services of some workers. Vijayan with a group of armed Marxist leaders attacked me and I had a providential escape,” alleged Gopi.
Sudhakaran stated that the people of Kerala would determine who Pinarayi is and that the charges against him are intended to cover up the government’s corruption cases.
