Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s much-publicised “surprise visit” to a farmer’s family near the Mettur Dam is now being revealed to be a carefully choreographed photo-op, after the elderly woman at the centre of the episode revealed that a Tahsildar had visited her the previous night, as reported in OneIndia Tamil.
The incident took place after Vijay visited Salem for the opening of the Mettur Dam on September 1. The dam, which is traditionally opened on June 12 for the Kuruvai cultivation season in the Cauvery Delta, was opened nearly three months late this year.
After inaugurating the dam and showering it with flowers, Vijay met the family of Ramasamy from Chinnakavur village near the dam. During the interaction, an elderly woman named Chellam held Vijay’s hand, caressed his cheek and blessed him.
Vijay then removed his sunglasses, reportedly worth around ₹40,000–₹45,000 and placed them on Chellam. He also distributed dhotis and saris to people gathered there.
The visuals quickly went viral, with TVK supporters comparing Vijay’s interaction with the elderly woman to the style of former Chief Minister and actor M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). Some also claimed that Vijay had made an unannounced visit to the family’s farm.
But Chellam’s subsequent media interviews have raised questions about just how “surprise” the visit really was.
In one interview, while wearing the sunglasses gifted by Vijay, Chellam recounted her conversation with the Chief Minister:
“I told Vijay that I survive on the ₹1,000 ‘Women’s Rights Grant’ [Magalir Urimai Thogai]. He simply nodded in agreement but didn’t say anything specific. I then mentioned that I had lost my ration card for the 4 kg of rice and asked him to help arrange for a replacement. Vijay replied, ‘Okay, mother.'”
It was during the same interaction that she revealed that a Tahsildar had visited her the previous night.

That detail has raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the supposed surprise visit. If a revenue official had already visited the elderly woman the night before, the claim that Vijay simply turned up unexpectedly at the farm becomes difficult to take at face value.
Local farmers and residents were reportedly informed beforehand, with the clothing items procured and kept ready for distribution during Vijay’s interaction.
In other words, what was presented as an organic encounter between the Chief Minister and rural residents appears to have had considerable groundwork behind it.
The episode also bears an unmistakable resemblance to the political imagery perfected by MGR.
MGR’s public persona was built around carefully cultivated images of direct contact with ordinary people. His signature sunglasses, his interaction with elderly women and his gestures of personal generosity became part of a larger political mythology that blurred his screen persona with his political identity.
Vijay, another actor-turned-politician, appears to be leaning into a similar visual vocabulary.
The sunglasses. The elderly woman. The embrace. The gifts. The rural backdrop. And the supposedly spontaneous encounter with an ordinary family.
The symbolism was almost tailor-made for comparison with MGR.
The ₹40,000-plus sunglasses may have created the viral moment. But it was the grandmother’s revelation about the Tahsildar’s visit the previous night that has put the entire “surprise visit” under scrutiny.
What was sold as spontaneity was actually artifically orchestrated.
