“Only After Annamalai, People Noticed BJP In TN”: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram Makes Surprise Praise

In a surprising turn, Sivaganga Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has praised Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai during a recent interview. He remarked that, regardless of personal opinions or policy differences, Annamalai has undeniably drawn public attention to the BJP in Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that under previous leaders like Tamilisai Soundararajan, Pon Radhakrishnan, and C.P Radhakrishnan, the party did not receive the same level of recognition. This statement has since gone viral, especially in light of recent speculations about a potential leadership change within the Tamil Nadu BJP.

Tamil Nadu Congress Struggles in Tamil Nadu

Karti candidly admitted that the Congress party has been in decline in Tamil Nadu, ranking around fifth or sixth in terms of voter support. He pointed out that since 2014, there has been no independent assessment of Congress’s electoral strength in the state, and if anything, its influence has diminished rather than grown. He acknowledged that Congress’s victories have largely depended on alliances, and he wishes for the party to regain strength independently—though he is skeptical about the leadership’s willingness to take bold steps in that direction.

Karti Chidambaram said, “Today, my honest assessment, as far as I am concerned, is that the Congress party is the fifth or sixth (most significant) party in Tamil Nadu. This is a debatable point because we have not contested independently, and our true vote strength has not been tested since 2014. It is likely at that level or has declined slightly, but it could not have grown significantly. Given the crowded political landscape, what does the future for the party? We cannot offer great hope. We are winning solely by relying on alliances, and I wish for that to change. It does not have to be me who does this—someone else can do it. However, I don’t see anyone else thinking outside the box or make the necessary effort.”

Discussing the political landscape, Karti noted that parties in Tamil Nadu have historically gained prominence by establishing a unique presence rather than relying on alliances. He cited actor Vijay’s recent political foray as an example, stating that although Vijay has a strong fanbase, his party has gained traction because of his dramatic public statements.

Similarly, he emphasized that the BJP in Tamil Nadu only gained significant attention after Annamalai took charge. Prior to his leadership, the party struggled to make an impact despite the efforts of previous leaders. He also criticized the Tamil Nadu Congress for lacking fresh, articulate leaders who can effectively engage with the public.

Karti Chidambaram said, “Whether we like it or not, I am ideologically opposed to the BJP, but it was only after Annamalai’s arrival that people started noticing the party. When Tamilisai, Pon Radhakrishnan, or C.P. Radhakrishnan were in charge, the party did not attract much attention. People want energetic and outspoken leaders, and being candid is an added advantage. That kind of energetic candor has not been displayed by anyone in the Tamil Nadu Congress for a long time.”

Karti also expressed doubt about the party’s ability to reclaim its position in Tamil Nadu’s political arena. He admitted that while he believes he could bring a new dynamic to the party, he has little expectation of being given the responsibility of leading Tamil Nadu Congress. He concluded by stating that the party faces an uphill battle in the state, as the political field continues to become more competitive.

Vijay Lacks Ideological Clarity, Mirrors Dravidian Politics

Commenting on actor-turned-politician Vijay, Karti Chidambaram remarked that Vijay has yet to establish a clear ideological stance. He pointed out that, for now, Vijay appears to align with typical Dravidian party positions, such as opposing the National Education Policy (NEP). However, Karti acknowledged that Vijay brings a certain momentum to the political scene due to his film background and strong fanbase.

Karti said, “Today, Vijay has also launched a party, but its ideological clarity is still lacking. Some positions are beginning to take shape, but it is clear that their politics fully align with Dravidian ideology. They are opposing schemes like NEP and delimitation in line with all major political parties. They have not introduced any different approach or any distinct ideology.”
