“One Who Understands Sutra Is Shudra, One Who Understands Brahman is Brahmin”: Filmmaker Pravin Gandhi Busts Leftist-Dravidianist Rhetoric On Caste, Slams Pa. Ranjith And Vetrimaaran

At the audio launch event of the upcoming film ‘Kuzhandhai C/O Goundampalayam’, directed by yesteryear actor Ranjith, film director Praveen Gandhi delivered a thought-provoking speech addressing the concept of caste.

In his speech, Praveen Gandhi said “I’ve always given statement against those directors who make caste films. Caste should say their caste Caste should never be spoken about. Nobody knows the caste of the person sitting here.”

Hitting out at Dravidianist directors like Pa. Ranjith and Vetrimaaran, Praveen Gandhi said “There’s a director called Pa. Ranjith and another called Vetrimaaran and there are a few more. Only after these directors grew, cinema started to wither. Who knows who is sitting beside me! All of us clap and whistle together in a cinema hall. One should never say caste in cinema.

He said that those who speak caste in movies should be boycotted socially. He also showered praises on actor Ranjith (the director of Kuzhandhai C/O Goundampalayam, not to be confused with Pa. Ranjith) for speaking against the ‘Happy Street’ events that happened in Coimbatore and other cities which was called out for showcasing cultural degeneracy.

Pointing out to a dialogue from the film which goes like – “Farmers don’t just plant seeds in land. They also do it in the womb“, Praveen Gandhi said that this dialogue didn’t come out of the blue for the director but just a reflection of how a large number of people have been indoctrinated and mislead by leaders belonging to the Dalit community for the mere sake of votes.

Praveen Gandhi then went on to emphasize the interconnectedness of humanity and questioned the historical emergence of the concept of Shudra. He remarked, “We are all interconnected… Who exactly is a Shudra? Do you know when the concept of Shudra emerged? We didn’t invent it… Hindus didn’t invent it… Those who invaded us in hordes – Islamic invaders and British colonizers. They introduced it. I

He continued, shedding light on the true essence of the Shudra, stating, “A Shudra is someone who understands the Sutra, who comprehends the essence of God.” Gandhi also touched upon the role of Brahmins, explaining, “A Brahmin is someone who understands Brahman… There’s no distinction. They used to tend to livestock. A Shudra is simply a farmer, nothing more. Who pushed them down? It was the invaders who came and oppressed them.

Praveen Gandhi’s bold statements didn’t go unnoticed. The Hindu Munnani, took to Twitter to commend the director. They tweeted, “Famous actor and director Ranjith directed the child. Speaking at the audio launch of the film ‘C/O Goundampalayam’, filmmaker Praveen Gandhi has publicly broken some facts. It is our custom that no one should see or listen to caste, and it was the Muslims and white Christians who invaded our country that created the caste distinction of Shudra.”

Praising Praveen Gandhi’s stance against caste divisions, the Hindu Munnani further stated, “In Tamil cinema, which talks about caste divisions and sows anti-Hindu thoughts, it is good for our society that directors like Praveen Gandhi have spoken like this. It was Muslims and Christians who created caste divisions among us. Hindu Munnani congratulates Praveen Gandhi.”
