One person lost their life and two others sustained serious injuries in a tragic incident at Cumbum Government Hospital, where a newly constructed building collapsed. The hospital, located in Kamban Nagar, on the border of Tamil Nadu’s Theni district, serves more than 30 rural areas, including many from Kerala, and is crucial for medical care in the region.
The incident occurred at the site of a new maternity and child health hospital building, which has been under construction at a cost of ₹10 crore for the past two years. Daily, a large number of workers, including Nambirajan, Muneeswaran, and Rathinavel from Madurai’s Oomachikulam area, have been involved in its construction. Tragically, while working on the portico and elevation of the building, a sudden collapse left them trapped inside.
Upon receiving the workers’ distress calls, the Cumbum South Police Station and fire department swiftly responded. After an hour-long effort, Nambirajan was rescued, but unfortunately, Muneeswaran and Rathinavel sustained severe injuries. They were promptly given first aid at Cumbum Government Hospital before being transferred to Theni Government Hospital for further treatment.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, registering a case. Colleagues and social activists have expressed deep sorrow and concern over the collapse, citing potential issues with construction materials and calling for a thorough inquiry into the building’s integrity.
