Police officers, on New Year’s Eve, have arrested a man in Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar for allegedly storing 85 litres of alcohol at home, which is 20 times over the allowed limit. The accused, identified as Mani, is a 61-year old real-estate agent. The liquor was stored at the accused’s residence in Rajajinagar.
The accused had stored the alcohol in 114 bottles, all of them 750ml. He has claimed that he had bought the liquor from the Air Force Canteen at Mekhri Circle, with the help of a Warrant Officer. According to an officer from the Bassaveshwara Nagara police station, he has not been able to provide any bills or records of procurement.
The search was conducted at the accused’s residence based on a tip-off. Excise officers told the police that the maximum quantity of alcohol a person can store at home at a time is around four litres. On finding that the accused was storing over 20 times more than the permitted quantity, he was arrested and charged under section 34 (penalty for illegal possession) of the Karnataka Excise Act.
