“North-South, My Hair” Annamalai Launches Scathing Attack On DMK Over Anna University Sexual Harassment Case, Slams Mishandling And Divisive Politics

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai lambasted the DMK for focussing on divisive politics, stating, “If you ask, Tamil Nadu is this or that—North and South—my hair!” in Coimbatore at a press conference condemning the handling of the Anna University sexual harassment case, involving an alleged DMK functionary who assaulted a female student on campus. Annamalai accused the DMK of shielding the accused due to his political connections and criticized the police for leaking the victim’s personal details in the FIR, calling the mishandling shameless and condemnable.

The incident involved an alleged DMK functionary who trespassed into the campus and assaulted a female student. Annamalai criticized the DMK government and the police department for their mishandling of the case, including the public disclosure of the victim’s details through a leaked FIR, calling their actions shameless and condemnable.

On 26 December 2024, during a press meet in Coimbatore, Annamalai criticized the DMK, stating, “The accused was able to lay hands on the woman solely because of (his) DMK cover. It’s very simple. Any human with common sense and brain knows that he was not questioned at the station because of his position within the DMK and his connections with DMK ministers. He has previously committed a similar crime, and now he has repeated it for the second time. Look how all the minister reacted? How did the FIR get leaked? Across India, CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems) is connected to police stations through fiber optic cables. As soon as data is entered, it goes directly to the master server, monitored by a control room with an SP and Inspector. So, how did the FIR get released? Apart from the police department, who else could have leaked it?”

Annamalai explained that the system was secure and could not be hacked. Criticizing the police department, he questioned, “Is this an FIR, sir? Even an illiterate person would draft it better. It raises doubts about whether the victim women or the accused is at fault. You’ve written it in a way that makes  the woman did something wrong. Reading such an FIR makes my blood boil.

Angrily, Annamalai spat during the press conference, emphasizing that the FIR unfairly targeted the victim, he continued, “‘I went with my lover, sat in a secluded place, I was kissing my lover’—is this an FIR?”

He spat and asked, “Don’t you feel ashamed wearing the khaki uniform and drafted a FIR like this? Don’t you feel ashamed? A wrong was done to the woman, reading this FIR—will it even hold up in court? I’ve also written a thousand FIRs, and will this stand in any courtroom. What is this? You’ve described it as if the woman was spending a private moment with her lover, kissing him, and then someone jumped out of the bushes, captured photos, and threatened her. Is this how an FIR is supposed to be drafted?”

Pointing to the leaked FIR, he added, “In the leaked FIR. (You’ve leaked) the woman’s name, her mobile number, her father’s name, and even her town. Shame on you! If anyone in the DMK has any dignity, they should feel ashamed. You’ve ruined the woman’s family—her name and her father’s name…  You’ve given a black mark to carry for seven generations. Are you even a human being?” He spat again, visibly enraged.

Slamming DMK Higher Education Minister Govi. Chezhian, who criticized Annamalai by claiming that the state had been peaceful during his three-month absence, Annamalai retorted sharply, “You should feel ashamed to be a minister. I am speaking respectfully only because I hold a position within a party.”

Criticizing the DMK’s divisive politics stoking a North-South divide, Annamalai said, “If you ask, Tamil Nadu is this or that—North and South—my hair! For how many years will we keep dying on this rhetoric? For sixty years, it’s been North vs. South. Watch, by tomorrow morning, the DMK will be back at it with their tax grievances, stating, ‘didn’t receive tax, hair, and shell.’ And in response, without any work, I’ll hold a press meet and say, ‘We gave this much, measured and beyond measure. Are we, in Tamil Nadu, even discussing real issues affecting the people? Politics here has become nothing more than spitting.”
