Residents of Veeracholapuram, a small village near the Kattumannarkoil temple in Cuddalore district, are renewing their long-standing appeal to the district administration for a bridge across the Rajan Canal. Approximately 150 families reside in this village, and for decades, they have been forced to carry their deceased across the canal to reach the burial ground.

Currently, the villagers must swim or wade through the canal with the deceased to access the cemetery. Often, banana stems are fashioned into makeshift floats to help transport the bodies. This arduous and risky journey has been a routine practice for years, as requests for a bridge from the Panchayat Union have gone unanswered.

The recent death of a 92-year-old resident, Kaliamoorthy, has brought this issue back to the forefront. Villagers once again had to carry his body across the canal by swimming, highlighting the ongoing difficulties they faced in the absence of a bridge.

Following this incident, the residents of Weeracholapuram have urgently appealed to the district authorities to construct a bridge over the Rajan Canal, citing the need for a safe and dignified means of transporting their deceased.
