The incident occurred at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School hostel in the Courtallam region, which is allegedly managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. The affected students belonging to classes 6, 11, and 12 were from areas including Punnaiyapuram, Boganallur and Kerala.
All nine are currently under medical observation, and the school administration has begun a probe to identify if any other students have experienced similar reactions.
This troubling episode comes amid a series of recent food safety scares in the district. Earlier, six residents of an old age home died after consuming contaminated food, and in a separate case, over a dozen professors fell ill from contaminated food containing a dead lizard during a Naan Muthalvan training at Madras University, prompting hospitalisation and protests over poor food safety in June 2025.
With multiple food-related health incidents surfacing in a short span, public concern over food hygiene and safety in the region continues to intensify.
