The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has seized the assets of Popular Front of India (PFI) member implicated in the 2016 murder of a Hindu Munnani leader in Coimbatore.
The property belonging to the accused, Subair, was confiscated under the directive of the NIA Special Court in Poonamallee, Chennai. Subair, along with other accomplices, all affiliated with the banned PFI, participated in the brutal assassination of C Sasikumar, a spokesperson for the Hindu Munnani in Coimbatore. The perpetrators—Saddam Hussain, Subair, Mubarak, and Rafiqul Hassan—ambushed Sasikumar with deadly weapons while he was returning home from his party office on his motorcycle on 22 September 2016. Sasikumar suffered severe injuries and later died from them.
The NIA took over the investigation from the Coimbatore police and discovered that the accused members of the PFI had conspired to sow terror within a specific community without any provocation or prior animosity.
During their inquiry, the NIA unearthed that Subair had transferred his property, acquired in 2012, to his mother through a gift settlement deed in 2020. This transfer occurred after the crime was committed and after the chargesheet was filed, suggesting an attempt by Subair to evade legal repercussions. In 2023, the NIA petitioned for the attachment and forfeiture of Subair’s property. The special court, recognizing the validity of the request, ordered the attachment. The trial for this case began in 2022 and is currently ongoing.
Regarding this matter, the NIA issued a press release through its official X handle on 7th June 2024, ” The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has attached the property of a Popular Front of India (PFI) member involved in the 2016 murder of a Hindu Front leader in Coimbatore. The property of accused Subair has been attached on orders of the NIA Special Court, Poonamallee, Chennai.”
“Subair, along with other co-accused, all members of the proscribed PFI, were involved in the gruesome killing of C. Sasikumar, Spokesperson, Hindu Front, Coimbatore. Sasikumar was brutally hacked with lethal weapons while he was returning home from his party office on his two-wheeler on 22nd September 2016. The accused, Saddam Hussain, Subair, Mubarak and Rafiqul Hassan, had attacked the victim in front of Chakra Vinayaka Temple, under Thudiyalur Police Station limit, Coimbatore. Sasikumar sustained grievous injuries, and later succumbed to the same. NIA took up the case from Coimbatore police and re-registered it as RC-03/2018/NIA/DLI. The agency found that the conspiracy was hatched by accused PFI members with the aim of creating terror among a particular community and without any provocation or enmity. NIA, which has already chargesheeted all five accused in the case, found during investigation that Subair had, in 2020, transferred his property, purchased in 2012, to his mother via a gift settlement deed. Since the transfer took place after the commission of the crime and post filing of the charge sheet, it was seen by NIA as an attempt to thwart legal action against Subair. In 2023, NIA filed a petition seeking attachment and forfeiture of the said property u/s 33 of UA(P) Act. The special court, seeing merit in the application, ordered the attachment.” added.
