58-year old Sivaramakrishnan, also called as Ramesh, the owner of the famous “Mylapore Jannal Bajji Kadai” passed away due to coronavirus. He died on sunday morning at the Government General Hospital in Royapettah after being admitted after a corona positive test result.
To Chennaites, and more specifically the residents of Mylapore, the area signifies a lot of iconic landmarks, be it the temples, or the famous Kaalathi Rose milk shop. A similar legendary hangout spot that has its place in the hearts of people in the city is the jannal bajji kadai opposite Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore. With its blue window and the complete absence of a nameplate or an announcement board, one would wonder how it was famous. But, it has been a local legend for the past 25 years, selling hot bajjis, bondas and tiffin to its regular customers.
The window belongs to the house that is opposite the main entrance of the temple, from where Ramesh would sell his snacks to the hungry customers. Ramesh and his wife Madhuram were a very familiar presence in the locality and would always be ready to serve customers.
Many people took to social media to reminisce about the jannal bajji kadai and the man behind the windows.
It was reported that Sivaramakrishnan died of COVID on Sunday morning. He was directly taken to the Krishnamepet cremation ground.
He is survived by 2 daughters and a brother.
