Modi Set For Historic Third Term As NDA Crosses 300 Seats, Swearing-In Ceremony Scheduled For 9 June 2024

In a significant move, it has been announced that Narendra Modi will be sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for an unprecedented third consecutive term on Sunday, 9 June 2024. The announcement was made during the NDA parliamentary party meeting held at the Central Hall of the old Parliament building, attended by senior alliance leaders, chief ministers, and NDA MPs, including prominent figures like Chirag Paswan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Anupriya Patel, and Pawan Kalyan.

After Modi’s election as the leader of NDA MPs, notable alliance members like N. Chandrababu Naidu, Nitish Kumar, and Eknath Shinde are expected to accompany him for a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. They will present her with the list of parliamentarians supporting Modi’s candidature.

The NDA’s decisive majority of 303 seats, bolstered by the addition of small parties and independent candidates, paves the way for Modi’s third consecutive term as Prime Minister. This consolidates the BJP’s position as the dominant political force in the country, outperforming the I.N.D.I.A bloc with 234 MPs and the Congress with 99 MPs in the new parliament.

Notably, the BJP emerged as the largest single party with 240 Lok Sabha seats after the initial vote count, falling short of a majority by 32 seats. However, with 28 seats from NDA partners TDP and JDU, along with support from other allies, the NDA surpassed the majority mark of 272, reaching a total of 292 seats initially. The latest support from small parties and independents has pushed the BJP-led NDA past the 300-seat mark.

In a diplomatic move, India is likely to extend invitations to the leaders of several neighboring nations to attend Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. The esteemed leaders expected to receive invitations include the Prime Ministers of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, and Mauritius. The office of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has confirmed receiving and accepting Modi’s invitation, while Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also reportedly accepted the invitation, as per diplomatic sources.

Additionally, invitations are anticipated to be extended to Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth.
