In a shocking turn of events in Kerala’s Malappuram district, the Paloor Subramanya Temple saw celebrations for the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, featuring a Duffmuttu performance. This traditional Islamic art form honours Islamic heroes and martyrs. The event, which saw participants wearing footwear inside the Hindu temple, has sparked significant controversy.
Shocking and disgraceful incident from Al Kherala !!!
Celebrating Eid Milad-un-Nabi in a temple is an insult to our traditions and heritage. If tomorrow, the Waqf Board lays claim to this temple land, citing 'religious practices,' will the so-called seculars wake up? Respect for… pic.twitter.com/fuUoNGS6yW

While some local media portray the event as an example of Kerala’s celebrated communal harmony, critics argue that this instance raises serious concerns about religious sensitivity and secularism. The celebration of Milad-i-Nabi within a Hindu temple with Duffmuttu has led to questions about whether such cross-religious events would be reciprocated with Hindu festivals like Sri Krishna Jayanthi or Ganesh Chaturthi in mosques.
It is noteworthy that several Ganesha processions during the Hindu festival of Vinayaka Chaturthi have seen stone pelting and attacks by the Islamist community across the country.
The incident has also prompted concerns among Hindus about the preservation of the sanctity of their religious spaces. Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday celebration in a Hindu temple draws criticism due to his historical rejection of other religions, including Hinduism—a stance frequently cited by extremist groups.
This was not a single occurrence. A similar “celebration” was reported at the Nilambur Uppada Sreedharma Shasta Temple, intensifying the debate on respect for the Hindu religion by the Islamist community and their overbearing nature in making everything Islamic, especially in a Muslim-dominated Malappuram.
