midday Meal Workers In TN To Go On Indefinite Strike From Jan 20 Over Unfulfilled DMK Promises

Midday meal workers across Tamil Nadu have announced an indefinite strike starting 20 January 2026, demanding the fulfilment of assurances made by the DMK government during the last Assembly elections.

The decision was taken at a preparatory conference held at the Thomas Club Hall near Coimbatore Railway Station. The meeting was presided over by district president of the Noon Meal Workers’ Union, Banulatha. The conference was inaugurated by Aranganathan, State Vice President of the All Departments Pensioners’ Association.

Addressing the gathering, district secretary Latha said the government had failed to honour key commitments made to noon meal employees. She listed the union’s demands, which include the implementation of time-scale pay, immediate promotion of cooking assistants to cook posts after completion of five years of service, a family pension scheme with a minimum pension of ₹9,000, and the filling up of long-pending vacancies.

Tamil Nadu Government Employees’ Union district president Jaganathan, state executive committee member Ravi, Noon Meal and Anganwadi Pensioners’ Union district president Ramasamy, district secretary Rajagopal, and over 200 workers participated in the conference, reiterating that the strike would proceed unless their demands are addressed.
