Congress-ruled Telangana’s Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has made derogatory remarks against Hindu deities by contrasting Lord Ram with Lord Shiva, associating the two deities with different regional and economic identities.
Speaking at a conclave in New Delhi on Monday, 28 September 2026, Reddy was asked why the Congress has been able to form governments in several southern states while struggling to establish a similar presence in the north.
Responding to the question, Reddy attributed the difference to what he described as a divide between Dravidians and Aryans and between devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Ram.
“It is simple. We are Dravidians and Aryans. There are devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Ram.”
Reddy then accused the BJP of appropriating Lord Ram and turning him into a political symbol.
“The BJP has, in a way, appropriated Lord Ram and turned him into a political symbol. It is an emotion and a sentiment,” he said.
He questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other BJP leaders frequently use the slogan “Jai Shri Ram” but do not similarly use “Har Har Mahadev” on public platforms.
“Why don’t they say ‘Har Har Mahadev’? Prime Minister Modi and BJP leaders are always seen saying ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Have you ever seen them say ‘Har Har Mahadev’ on a public platform?” Reddy asked.
The Telangana Chief Minister further claimed that BJP leaders did not appear to like it when “Har Har Mahadev” was raised.
He then linked the two deities to different economic groups, saying, “Lord Shiva is the god of the poor, while Lord Ram is the god of the rich. The BJP is a rich party. That is the simple funda,” he said.

He even goes on to say that Prabhu Ram is the God of rich people and Shiva is the God of the poor.

Reddy made the remarks at an event organised by Pratidin Media Network in New Delhi.
