A controversy has erupted at the Thiruverkadu Devi Karumariamman Temple near Chennai after lizards and insects were allegedly found inside a purified drinking water dispensing unit installed for devotees within the temple premises.
The temple, regarded as one of the most prominent shrines in the region, witnesses heavy footfall daily, with devotees visiting from Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and other parts of Tamil Nadu to offer prayers and fulfil vows. On auspicious and special occasions, the number of visitors runs into thousands.
According to devotees, the water purification and dispensing machine had remained non-functional and poorly maintained for a prolonged period despite being installed as part of basic infrastructure facilities for visitors. The issue came to light after visuals surfaced showing lizards and cockroaches floating inside the water storage tank connected to the purification unit.
A regular devotee, who had reportedly raised multiple complaints earlier without any action being taken, recorded a video of the contaminated water tank and circulated it on social media. The footage subsequently went viral, triggering shock and concern among devotees.
Following the circulation of the video, temple authorities stated that action would be initiated in connection with the incident. They indicated that maintenance-related lapses would be examined and appropriate steps taken against those responsible.
The incident has caused concern among devotees, particularly given that the contaminated unit had been installed to supply purified drinking water to the large number of visitors frequenting the temple.
