List of attack on Hindus in May in Bangladesh

Like the case of Pakistan, religious minorities in Bangladesh are also facing persecution to a great extent. The World Hindu Federation, Bangladesh has just released a press note that lists all the attacks on Hindus that occurred in the month of May.

Along with 4 Hindu murders in May 2020, the list also notes 12 loot cases, 435 acres land grabbing, 43 Hindu families displaced, and 10 Hindu families being exiled.

Here are some of the attacks on Hindu minorities reported that happened from May 1 to May 31.

May 1: 3 incidents – 50 local Muslims vandalized the house of Ananta Biswas in Lakhirpara village in Kotalipara Upazila of Gopalganj in Bangladesh, over allegation of breaking branches of a tree. They attacked and threatened the family members to leave the country. In another incident, goons led by Upazila Chairman MA Moeed Farooq attacked Shri Deenbandhu Sen’s poultry farm in Moulvibazar District. A student named Rony Satyarthi of Manikgong Debendra College was arrested over allegations of writing a derogatory post about Prophet Mohammad and Islam. His house was later attacked by and was forced to flee the village.

May 4: 4 incidents – Terrorists attacked Dr. Kajal Kumar Bhowmick when he was coming back from Comilla market. A body of a man identified as Swapan Chandra Sarkar was floating in Someshwari River. His body was recovered 33 hrs since his disappearance from Durgapur in Netrakona. Sanjay Sarkar of Subidpur village in Habiganj’s Baniachang upazila was arrested on charges of insulting Islam. Another man’s body identified as Dulan Rajbhar was recovered from a river.

May 5: 4 incidents – Unidentified terrorists broke into the house of a man named Karthik and attacked him with sharp weapons while asleep. They fled after family members woke up and screamed.  In Nawabganj upazila, Rakesh Chakraborty (18) was arrested for ‘hurting religious sentiments’. Local terrorists attacked and tried to occupy a Hindu man name Chittranjan’s house. Chittranjan and his two daughters were ciritically injured. A Hindu man’s house was set on fire at night, the woman of the house were tortured and by locals.

May 7: 10 Hindu families were attacked and threatened to leave the country by local sand mafia Mintu Mia in Narail district.

May 8: Sunil Chandra, a Hindu day labourer was killed by terrorists. His body was left in a bamboo bush near his house.

May 9: A Hindu man named Ranjit Debnath was attacked by Rubel Mia at the Nathpara village of Nasirnagar Upazila in Brahmanbaria district and his family members were injured. His house was attacked and Rubel Mia along with his men looted gold and silver jewellery, and 2,10,000 taka in cash. In another incident, Matin Gangra, a drug mafia tried to attack the house of Sudhir Kumar to occupy his property.

May 10: 10 Hindus were attacked and injured by Islamic terrorists at the Tatikona village of Chhatak Municipality in Sunamganj district over a Facebook comment. Their houses were vandalized and temples in the area destroyed. Shri Mihir Dev, Hindu gold trader was attacked and looted by members of the Nasirnagar Upazila Sub-Registrar office in Brahmanbaria district.

May 12: A Hindu named Tagore Das’ dead body was pulled out from a crematorium and buried in a graveyard by former member Bancharampur Union, Md Omar Farooq to degrade and dishonour the Hindu religion.

May 13: A 14 year old Hindu girl named Sanchita Shabdakar committed suicide in Kamalganj sub-district under Moulvibazar district of southeastern Bangladesh owing to repeated attempts by a Muslim man named Madhu Miah to sexually molest, harass and abduct her. In another incident, 10 Hindu people including men and women were injured and their houses were vandalized when local criminals attacked them with the intention of grabbing their properties at Kurushaferusha village of Phulbari Tenaodanga Union in Kurigram district.

May 14: Nayan Mallik’s house was set on fire by miscreants. One of his cows and a bull were burnt to death. 2 cows were 80% burnt.

May 15: About 20 Hindu men were taken by thel ocal union chairman and his goons to the union council office and thrashed them as the police watched silently. Another large attack took place to the Hindu community at Monpura in Bhola district by spreading rumors of blasphemy.

May 16: 3 Hindu women were gravely injured when a Muslim man named Sultan and his goons attacked the Hindu family in Pakhimara village of Kalapara in Patuakhali district in an attempt to grab their lands.

May 17: Some unidentified miscreants set fire to the house of Baul Ranesh Chakraborti Tagore (55) of Ujandhal village of Dirai upazila inSunamganj district. Police have not yet able to identify the perpetrators.

May 18: A Hindu farmer’s body was recovered from a jute field in Rasulpur.

May 19: Shri Sameer Haldar (55), a Hindu priest, and his wife were physically assaulted by local chairman Shahjahan Ali Khan and his goons at Ambria village of Morelganj in Bagerhat district to forcefully occupy their house and land.

May 25: Tapas Das, a Hindu Chhatra League activist from Patuakhali district, was stabbed to death in political revenge while undergoing treatment at Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College.

May 28: Mohammad Abdus Salam hit a Hindu girl named Suma Vishnu with an iron rod when she resisted his attempts to grab her ancestral land. On the same day, a Hindu businessman, at Ghoshpara, a town under Sherpur police station in Bogra district.

May 29: Two Hindu individuals Sridham Biswas and Saral Biswas were made to leave the country by putting false on them.

The condition of Hindus and other non-Muslim minorities in the neighbouring Islamic states is heart wrenching to say the least. The non-Muslim minorities put up with the threat of religious persecution on a daily basis.
