Congress and Bollywood seem to be in the same trajectory. Both don’t have any new narrative or content that attracts the public. In today’s times the public has experienced Pushpa, RRR, KGF, Trance, Ayyappanum Koshiyum, Vikram, Kartikeya 2 etc. If the answer to these from Bollywood are Shamshera, Laal Singh Chaddha, Rakshabandhan, Samrat Prithviraj, Jugg Jugg Jeeyo, Bhool Bulaiya 2, Brahmastra and the likes, it will be very hard for them to withstand the competition from the South. I am not considering the south remakes that Bollywood has been shelling out. Vikram Vedha which had R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi play the lead roles in Tamil, is definitely not going to woo the Hindi audience as they must’ve already seen the Tamil film in OTT by now.
I am strictly looking at the Bollywood original creations. A handfuls like Gangubai Kathiawadi and Kashmir Files are a saving grace although I would not include Vivek Agnihotri as a part of Bollywood as this great industry never saw him as one of his own.
We are seeing a similar narrative paralysis in Congress too. People seem to be so bored of their same ghisa-pita rant on garibi, berozgari and secularism etc. What unique solutions are they offering even in their ruling states to counter Modi’s non-stop creative schemes?
PM Modi seems to be creating and riding the rising nationalist tide among Indians. Har Ghar Tiranga, Kartavya path, Subhash Chandra Bose’s statue in India Gate, Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, and the list goes on. Congress has given a series of flops like Bollywood and Modi has given a series of hits like the South movies that has shifted the loyalties of the public.
Hindus today are saying enough is enough. They are miffed with Congress’s minority appeasement for around 50 years in the name of secularism. They are angry with Bollywood also for similar reasons. They have realized over the years that a lot of Hindi movies have shown Hindu priests as villains and have insulted Hindu gods in the name of creativity. Hindus have seen that the Bollywood movies for the most part have been very careful in taking the same liberties with other minority religions and seemed to take Hindus for granted. Earlier, the Hindus had enjoyed the same movies and made big stars out of those heroes but they reached a tipping point now and they are no more amused by such selective creativity of Bollywood. Similarly, in their minds today, Congress is also a party that had taken the Hindus for granted and were always focusing in appeasing the minority communities purely for their votes. Modi like the South Indian movies except for the current Tamil movie industry gave them the respect that they were yearning for.
Parivarvaad is haunting both Congress and Bollywood today. Congress is being run totally by a family today. Even in Bollywood some key families are ruling over Bollywood. Wherever there is a family(s) control and new people outside the family(s) are not welcomed, the quality of the institution eventually declines. The aam aadmi, who is looking for more of Bharatiya flavor in the stories, does not relate to the West-influenced ideas of both Congress and Bollywood. The next couple of years will decide the fate of both these once-upon-a-time popular entities. Although both seem to be in a denial mode, let us see how Congress and Bollywood respond to this “transform or perish” phase.
