“Last Year Bro-Bro, This Year No Bro, Why Bro?”: BJP Leader Annamalai’s Savage Response To Rahul Gandhi’s Cold Birthday Wish For MK Stalin

On the occasion of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s 73rd birthday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended greetings via social media, marking a noticeable departure from the warm, affectionate tone of his messages in previous years. This year’s wish, posted on X (formerly Twitter), was succinct and formal: “Wishing a very happy birthday to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru @mkstalin. May you have good health, strength, and a long life of dedicated service to the people of Tamil Nadu.”

Absent were the personal endearments like “my dear brother” or references to shared ideological battles that characterized his earlier tributes.

In contrast, Gandhi’s 2025 message was laced with camaraderie and political solidarity. He wrote: “Wishing a very happy birthday to my brother and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Thiru @mkstalin
. We continue to stand together in our commitment to preserve India’s rich diversity, federal structure, and Constitutional values. May you have good health and continued success in serving the people of Tamil Nadu.”

This echoed the mutual affection seen in Stalin’s own birthday wish to Gandhi in June 2025, where the DMK chief described him as a “brother-in-ideals, bound not by blood, but by thought, vision, and purpose.”

Going back to 2024, Gandhi’s greeting was even more effusive: “A very happy birthday to my dear brother, and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru @mkstalin. Wishing you the very best in the times to come as we fight to protect the pluralistic and federal idea of India.

These earlier exchanges highlighted a close alliance, with both leaders frequently emphasizing their joint opposition to perceived threats to India’s secular and federal fabric.

The toned-down message this year comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the Congress and the DMK, long-standing allies in the INDIA bloc. As Tamil Nadu gears up for its Assembly elections later in 2026, seat-sharing negotiations have hit a deadlock, exposing deep fissures in the partnership.

The Congress, buoyed by its performance in recent national polls, has demanded 40-45 seats—up from the 25 it contested in 2021—along with a Rajya Sabha berth and even hints of power-sharing at the local level.

However, the DMK has resisted, offering only a marginal increase and firmly rejecting any power-sharing, with Stalin dismissing such demands as a “conspiracy” aimed at undermining the alliance.

Recent developments have further widened the rift. Informal talks between Congress leaders like Girish Chodankar and DMK’s Kanimozhi Karunanidhi stalled over seat allocations, leading to public barbs.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized the DMK for past “mistakes” and warned of a “suitable response” if respect wasn’t accorded to Congress workers.

In response, the DMK has reportedly conditioned further negotiations on the Congress disciplining outspoken members like Tagore and Praveen Chakravarty.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami has capitalized on the discord, claiming the alliance is fracturing and speculating on a potential Congress split similar to 1996.

Internally, the Congress faces its own divisions, with state unit president K Selvaperunthagai issuing warnings against public discussions on alliance matters.

Meanwhile, buzz about the Congress exploring ties with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has added to the speculation of a possible breakup.

Political analysts view Gandhi’s subdued wish as a subtle signal of the strained relations. The omission of ‘brother’ and any reference to joint struggles is telling. Despite this, both parties insist the alliance remains intact, with recent meetings suggesting an understanding could be reached soon.

BJP leader Annamalai took a jibe at the widening rift between DMK and Congress.
