Ladakh to get its first ever Central University

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved for the newly formed union territory Ladakh to have its first-ever Central University.  This university is to have Engineering, Medicine, Science, and Technology, as well as Arts, to provide for students of different interests. It is reported that it will also house a special wing for research related to Buddhist culture and literature.

This announcement was made in a meeting that discussed and re-evaluated all the decisions that were taken and the changes that were made after Ladakh was made into a Union Territory. It was also meant as an attempt to better the lives of those in the region as it had been war-torn neck deep.

This meeting was attended by the Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, Foreign Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Union Defence Advisor Ajit Doval, and other officials.

This has been welcomed by the Ladakhis. In a few days, Ladakh will be celebrating its first anniversary of becoming a UT. On 5 August last year, the Centre had moved Parliament to strip the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir of its special status in the Constitution and create the two union territories. The Centre had then promised that the Union Territory status would lead to an improvement in the security situation in the centrally-administered territories and put the focus back on development, The Hindustan Times reported.
