After being raped by a local leader who belongs to the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth-wing of CPM, a minor girl belonging to a Scheduled Caste community succumbed to her burns after she committed suicide in Kattappana in Idukki district.
The minor girl who set herself ablaze eight days ago suffering more than 60% burns, succumbed to her injuries at the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.
The young girl was raped on October 21 by Manu Manoj, an autorickshaw driver and CPM-DYFI leader in Idukki district. The Dalit girl’s parents filed a complaint with the local police and two days after the incident the girl attempted suicide.
The rapist comrade Manu Manoj was absconding after the incident. However, he was later arrested and charged under sections of the POCSO Act.
To do some damage control, the rapist has been ousted from DYFI after his political links to the ruling CPM sparked a controversy. Also, DYFI in Idukki district has said that though he was a member in the party he did not hold any post.
