A nun identified as Mable Joseph (42) was found dead in a well at St. Joseph’s convent in Kureepuzha near Kollam on Friday (April 16). The deceased is identified as Mable Joseph (42), a native of Karunagappally.
Her body was found in the well by the inmates of the convent when they went looking for her after she missed the morning prayer.
A suicide note allegedly written by her was also recovered from her bedroom in which she stated that she was ending her life due to my health issues and allergies adding that nobody was responsible for her death.
“Nobody is responsible for my death. Keep me in your prayers,” the note further read. The letter also stated that her body would be inside the well.
Reports mention that Mable reached the convent a month ago. Police are investigating the matter.
In Kerala, there have been around 20 cases of nuns being found dead in the wells of convents since 1987 including the sensational Sister Abhaya Case, wherein a Catholic nun Abhaya was found dead in a well on March 27, 1992.
Very recently, a nun named Sr Juseena Thomas (45) of St. Thomas Convent was found dead in a pond near an abandoned quarry near Vazhakkala in Ernakulam.
In May 2020, 21-year-old Divya P Johnny, a novice, was found dead in a well at a convent in Thiruvalla. In September 2018, Sr Susan Mathew, a teacher at St Stephen school, Pathanapuram, was found dead in the well near her convent.
In all these cases, neither the convent officials nor the diocese filed an FIR or conducted a probe to find out the reasons for the deaths. After the burial, a press issue was released citing ‘normal death’ in these cases.
