In what comes across as an outrageous lie and malicious propaganda, a video of Kashmiri historian and poet Zareef Ahmed Zareef blaming the caste system for Hindus in Kashmir converting to Islam has gone viral on social media.
The video clipping shared by Yana Mir, CEO of TRK News based out of Kashmir, she captions it as “Beautifully explained by Zareef sahb.. Why Hindus converted to Islam in Kashmir… and possibly rest of India too Its time Brahmins realize this and give up targetting us… and let us live in peace Reminder: us converting doesn’t mean we support killing of brahmins”
In the video clip, Zareef says, “When we were Hindus, we were subjected to injustice. Brahmins had created the caste system. On the top is the superhuman, the Brahmin. After that level is the Vaishya. Then the Khatri was designated to trade. Then the fourth category of caste who they would call the Shudras. The most wretched of them all castes. They would be forbidden from going to public baths. If the Shudra touched their clothes, they burn those clothes. They would be seen as the most wretched – this was the Shudra. It caused the Shudras grave distress. That too I am a human being, I serve the Brahmin everything he needs. I take care of his cattle, feed them, and even milk them. But then I can’t even touch him? The Brahmin doesn’t let me swim in the river. He doesn’t let me drink from the well. What do I lack, I sow his crops, plant the seeds, water and winnow them, make the rice, and yet, treats me like an untouchable. It planted the seeds of realization. Right at this time, the Buddhist influence came from Central Asia through the Silk Road, from Tibet, China, Iran, Turan, Samarkand, Kashghar, Bukhara, Tashkent – the Muslims came from all these regions. The Muslims came as traders. They came with pashmina, shatoosh, dry fruits, crockery, ornaments, and jewellery. From here, they got work done on their pashmina, namda with our embroidery work. That’s how we got some prosperity. We looked at their clothes and liked it. We also liked their tasty cuisine. At first, individually, people slowly embraced the new faith until the mass conversion happened at the hands of Mir Syed Ali Hamdani. Anyone who embraced Islam was accepted, the ones who did not wasn’t forced.”

Zareef Ahmed Zareef’s attempts to blame the caste system for the conversion of Hindus to Islam in Kashmir are not only historically inaccurate but also a dangerous distortion of the region’s complex history. His portrayal of the caste system as the sole driver behind conversions conveniently ignores the documented genocide of Kashmiri Hindus during the medieval period, a brutal chapter of history that Zareef has chosen to whitewash. Moreover, while he critiques Hinduism’s caste system, he conveniently overlooks the presence of a similar hierarchical structure within Islam, which also divides people into inferior and superior categories.
By presenting this narrative, Zareef is engaging in harmful propaganda that distracts from the real issues at hand, including the history of religious persecution, forced conversions, and the ongoing struggle of Kashmiri Hindus. His statements not only undermine the painful reality of the Kashmiri Pandit genocide but also promote a revisionist agenda that erases the lived experiences of those who suffered.
Worse yet, Yana Mir, by amplifying this false narrative, is further perpetuating these misleading claims, giving them a platform and contributing to the spread of dangerous propaganda. Zareef’s claims and Mir’s promotion of them are a disservice to both the truth and the ongoing fight for justice.
