The JanaSena Party on 4 December 2025 issued a strong statement criticising the Tamil Nadu government for preventing the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam at Thirupparankundram Hill, despite the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court granting permission for the ritual.
In a post on X, the party said it “strongly objects” to the State’s decision to halt the age-old Hindu tradition and accused the government of doing so “to appease a particular section.” The party further alleged that restricting a long-standing religious practice amounted to disregarding judicial authority.
The JanaSena Party also condemned the detention of BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai, BJP leaders including former minister Nainar Nagendran, and members of Hindu Munnani who arrived at the hill to participate in the ceremony. The statement described their arrest as “illegal” and indicative of an “undemocratic approach.”
According to the party, the State government’s actions “disregarding court orders, restricting Hindu religious practices, and creating social discord” weaken public trust in the administration.
The statement, issued in the name of JanaSena Party president Pawan Kalyan, urged the Tamil Nadu government to respect religious freedoms and comply with the High Court’s directive allowing Hindus to light the Karthigai Deepam.
