“Is This How You Eradicate Sanatana Dharma?”: DMK Family-Owned Sun TV To Telecast Ramayana, Dravidian Stocks Suffer Meltdown

The iconic saga of Ramayana is set to return to the screens, making its comeback on Sun TV. The channel, owned by the DMK first family, has unveiled a promotional video for the show via its official platform on social media.

The timeless narrative of Ramayana, originally penned by the revered poet Valmiki, enjoys widespread acclaim globally. It has been adapted into numerous Indian and foreign languages, with Kambar’s Tamil rendition, Kamba Ramayana, being a notable example.

Ramayana intricately weaves the story of Rama, a prince hailing from the Raghu dynasty in Ayodhya, the capital of Kosala, and his consort Sita. Regarded as an epic that illuminates principles of duty, societal norms, and strategies of warfare within relationships, Ramayana has transcended mediums, from its origins as a literary work to an oral tradition and eventually a successful television series. Broadcasted in various languages including Hindi and Tamil, the Ramayana series has garnered a vast audience, reaching beyond Indian borders to captivate global viewers. Despite numerous reruns, the enduring allure of Ramayana ensures audiences remain engrossed with each re-airing.

However, the announcement of Ramayana’s telecast on Sun TV, owned by the DMK’s first family, has sparked widespread discussion, particularly in light of the party’s past criticisms of Hindu deities, notably Lord Ram, the central figure of Ramayana. The accompanying promo video, featuring the tagline “The beloved hero of Sita… Ramayana… coming soon,” has ignited fervent reactions online, with believers interpreting it as a triumph for Rama while upsetting the Dravidian ecosystem, who find themselves teased and taunted.

Against the backdrop of the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram temple earlier this year, discussions surrounding Rama have surged, further amplifying the significance of Sun TV’s decision to air the epic series ‘Ramayanam’ once more, following its initial broadcast on the channel in 2008.

Here are a few laments expressed by D-Stocks regarding the premiere of the epic Ramayana on SunTV.
