Idol Of Lord Vishnu Unearthed During Construction In Mannargudi, Thiruvarur District

A metal idol of Lord Vishnu was discovered on 23 June 2024 while digging a ditch for the construction of a house in Mannargudi.

This discovery occurred on Sanjivee Street, where Natarajan, a 52-year-old resident, was building a house on his vacant land in Modern Nagar. M. Ramurthy, 48, from Gudithangiche, was tasked with digging a ditch for the construction of a sewage tank.

During the process, Ramurthy unearthed a metal idol buried in the soil. The discovery was promptly reported to the Mannargudi Police Station and the District Collector’s office. District Collector K. Mahesh Kumar and Police Inspector Velayutham arrived at the scene to inspect the find.

The idol, identified as an ancient statue of Perumal, stands one and a half feet tall and weighs approximately 5 kg. The statue, along with the arch (Thiruvatchi), was handed over to the District Collector’s office for further examination.

Initial assessment of the idol seems to indicate that the idol belongs to the later Chola era.

The archaeological department will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover more details about the idol’s origin and historical significance.
