Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which is part of the political kichdi named I.N.D.I Alliance has blatantly come out in support of Palestine even as Islamist terror group Hamas carries out deadly terror attacks against Jews in Israel.
Aloor Sha Navas, who is an MLA from the Nagapattinam constituency and a spokesperson of the VCK said that India which has a history of not recognizing Israel as a country for a long time should stand with Palestine.
“When Israel was formed by usurping Palestine, it was not even recognized as a country and did not even share diplomatic ties. Such is the history of India. By that convention, #IndiaStandsWithPalestine is only right. Let us reject the BJP which stands with Israel.”, the I.N.D.I. Ally MLA said.

It is important to note that India formally recognized Israel as a country on 17 September 1950 and full diplomatic ties were established in 1992, and during both these instance it was the Congress which was ruling India.
However, for a long time India’s position on Israel was restricted due to Congress’ votebank politics. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi even went to the extent of recognizing the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people in 1974. India was the first non-Arab state to do so. The PLO militant wings openly engaged in acts of violence against Israeli civilians, both within Israel and outside of Israel and was even designated as a terror group by the USA.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who in 2012 said that support for the Palestinian cause has been a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy and that India supports the struggle of the Palestinian people to achieve a sovereign, independent, viable and united state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side and at peace with Israel. This position taken by Manmohan Singh was seen as an attempt to appease its Muslim votebank in India in the run up to 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
It was only after 2014 that India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi de-hyphenated its relationship with Israel and Palestine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel. Since then, the two countries have become close and have become partners in a wide range of field from agriculture to defence.
