A disturbing video from Madurai has gone viral, stirring public anger, after a local shopkeeper appeared before the District Collector pleading for action against a notorious criminal known as Rowdy Shiva. The shop owner, whose establishment is located in Periyakadai, accused Shiva of looting his shop and issuing repeated death threats.
According to the shopkeeper, despite filing complaints, no action has been taken by the authorities so far. In a chilling statement, Shiva allegedly told the victim, “I already have 16 cases against me. If I hack you, it’ll just be the 17th – no one can touch me.”
Choking up with emotion, the shopkeeper made a heartfelt plea to the Collector saying, “Rowdy Shiva threatened me and came with a sickle day before yesterday to my shop to slash me. The public are afraid of him. If asked, what he says? ‘I’ve had 16 cases on me and if I hack you, I will go inside for the 17th time. Tell anyone. I’ve all political and rowdies contacts.’ If you ask about him the bazaar anyone would say. My shop was looted and as a record I gave everything, but no one is taking any action. They have broken my shop’s CCTV camera and looted all things inside, after looting they are saying ‘Yes, I took it. Do whatever you can. I have muscle and money power you can’t do anything. I have petitioned to commissioner, AC office and CM cell received acknowledgement copy…”
He added, “I asked for the CSR copy, they aren’t even giving that. When you go inside, what do they say? “Are you such a big rowdy? Should I give you the CSR just because you asked?” That’s what they say at the police station. At the police station, they are supporting them. They also say that police is your friend, but I don’t know to what extent. That is, they are friends only to those who have money and power; they are not friends to people like us. People like us are being being tossed around. They aren’t accepting any CCTV footage from the shop opposite. Whatever you ask, they tell you to go away. I am already under so much mental stress. Today, my livelihood is in a very difficult situation. I’ve had a shop in a Periyakadai for 21 years. I can’t continue. It’s been five days since I’ve slept at night; I can’t. They are advising me to please leave the town. I can’t. One thing is, I can’t die by his hand. I’ll just die myself. Why get into trouble? He says, “I’ll cut off your two hands and legs and throw them away.” If anything happens, rather than having my hands and legs cut off, I thought it’s better to die completely. So, I’ve reached the point where I’m considering suicide. Please, no one can save me. Because their strength, compared to us is very great. I don’t have strength. I am just an ordinary businessman. I even told the media, but no one is taking this forward. Everyone has been held by him; that rowdy Shiva is such powerful. What does he say to me? “See if I don’t finish you off in two days,” he gives an open challenge. The public are all just watching. Everyone is scared looking at him. What can I say? When told at the police station, they also remain silent. It doesn’t seem like I will get any justice or fairness. I have come here to submit a petition to the collector. After me, I hope everyone else will not give yield to these rowdies and katta panjayathu (kangaroo courts). They say the police station is like a deity to us. But I don’t know how true that is. All police personnel are genuinely good people; it’s only a few police personnel who bring a bad name. Police, please do not be supportive of rowdies and kangaroo courts. If you are, ordinary people like us will suffer a lot. Even the CM recently said that they will not be supportive of rowdies, but they are completely supportive of the rowdies.”
