HR&CE to proceed with bulldozing heritage homes near Kapaleeswarar Temple

The executive officer D. Kaveri of Sri Kapali Temple in Mylapore under the HR&CE Department has stated that there will not be any rethinking on the plans made by the HR&CE Department for the ‘re-development’ of the temple property that lies alongside the Sri Kapaleeswar Temple despite many temple-goers and residents of Mylapore having expressed their reservations on this plan.

In essence, the HR&CE department will go ahead with the plan of bulldozing the heritage homes next to the ancient temple to build malls and parking lot.

The officer who has reportedly been not transferred for more than 9 years has asserted that over 95% of the residents on Kumaraguru Street (next to the temple) were former employees who had retired a long time ago and that they would all have to vacate their residences now.

“The next generation of these ex-employees are in corporate jobs and making good money. During their employment, we provided them with quarters at a low cost. “It is now time for us to provide quarters to the temple’s current employees,” she added.

She added that the plans are in the initial stages and have not yet been detailed. She stated that the overall plan is to have a parking lot in the basement and a small Kalyana Mandapam (marriage hall) on the first floor. The proposed complex will also include a cloakroom, toilets, and bath facilities, as well as quarters for current temple employees.

The executive officer further said that the rent for the PS School ground has been pending for a long time and that the discussion last week was to recover the rent from the school. She stated that the HR & CE minister intends to reactivate the sporting activity at the stadium.

She mentioned that a team from Anna University is currently conducting soil tests in order to restore the temple tank. They will decide on a specific plan of action based on the results of the test to ensure that water remains in the tank after this year’s monsoon rains.
