A CCTV video footage showing the horrifying moment when a biker is tossed into the air after his bike crashed into the steps of a grocery store at Padavinangady in Mangaluru, while he was trying to avoid colliding with a scooter, has gone viral on social media.
The bike rider has been identified as thirty year-old Prashanth Sanath, a resident of Sharbath Katte, who was coming towards Padavinangady junction.
The accident took place on Friday, May 7, when the motorcycle rider was trying to avoid colliding with a scooter that was crossing the road. The injured biker was admitted to a private hospital but he succumbed to his injuries. Another biker who was behind him, sustained a minor injury.
A witness who saw the accident said that as the scooter rider crossed the road, the biker coming from the opposite in a bid to avoid his hitting bike into the scooter, rammed into the steps of a shop. As a result he was tossed into the air.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hariram Shankar confirmed that the accident took place on Friday morning.
“The deceased was working as a supervisor at Chethana Enterprises in Neermarga. The accident took place at Maryhill-Padavinangady Airport Road at around 10.15 am,” Shankar said.
The police added that a case has been registered at Mangaluru Traffic East police station against a person who allegedly rode a scooter in such a dangerous way that led to the accident. “While checking CCTV visuals from the area, we have found a scooter rider had come onto the main road from a bylane. The deceased had tried to bypass him during which lost control of the bike resulting in the fatal crash,” a police officer said.
Further, the officer added that the case was filed under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. “An investigation is underway,” the officer said.
