The Hindu Munnani has issued a warning of statewide protests against the arbitrary demolition of ancient temples in Tamil Nadu. This condemnation follows the recent destruction of the centuries-old Muneeshwaran temple in Chinnamanur, Theni district, despite a prior agreement reached during peace talks between the community and local officials, promising that the temple would be preserved.
Three months ago, the municipal administration decided to demolish the Muneeshwaran temple, which is located near the farmers’ market in Chinnamanur town.
Following this decision, the Hindu Munnani organized discussions with officials, including Municipal Commissioner Gopinath and Bodi DSP Periaswamy. During these talks, a commitment was made that the temple would not be demolished.
However, despite this assurance and the Hindu Munnani’s declaration of victory during the Vinayagar Chaturthi public meeting, the municipal chairman of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam compelled the local administration and police to demolish the 50-year-old temple early on the morning of 13 September 2024 (at 5 AM).
To protest against such arbitrary atrocity against the Hindu temples, the Hindu Munnani have warned that they will conduct a state-level protest.
