On Saturday night, two unidentified men assaulted a Hindu Munnani functionary with an iron rod, causing tension in Coimbatore.
The injured has been identified as S Ramakrishnan, 36, of Thayammal Layout, Podanur. He is the vice-president of the Hindu Munnani Ukkadam unit.
Ramakrishnan was riding his motorcycle home from Ukkadam about 10.30 pm, according to police. Two men attacked him with an iron rod when he arrived at Sundarapuram Junction.
A group of local shopkeepers came to his aid, and the attackers fled the scene. Ramakrishnan was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where he was treated for his injuries.
Podanur police filed a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (attempt to murder) and formed a special team to arrest the two.
On Saturday night, many Hindu Munnani members gathered at the CMCH to demand that the accused be arrested by the police. Police personnel were deployed on the CMCH premises.
Hindu Munnani declared on Sunday that its representatives would besiege the district Collectorate if action is not taken. More than 50 police officers from Coimbatore city police and a Rapid Action Force (RAF) team have been deployed in front of the Collectorate. The RAF sent a truck equipped with tear gas shells.
Vanathi Srinivasan, BJP leader and Coimbatore South candidate, paid a visit to the injured Hindu Munnani functionary.
