The Hindu Munnani has strongly condemned the recent inclusion of E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) in the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Group 1 exam syllabus. The syllabus mentions his name among other prominent leaders who fought against British rule and for India’s freedom, causing a stir among various groups.
The TNPSC Group 1 syllabus lists E.V. Ramasamy as a notable figure in the National Renaissance, alongside esteemed freedom fighters such as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, V.O. Chidambaranar, Subramania Bharati, K. Kamaraj, and Subhas Chandra Bose. The inclusion of EVR has sparked controversy due to his well-documented anti-freedom statements and perceived cooperation with the British government.
In a post on social media platform X, Hindu Munnani expressed its disapproval, stating, “It is shocking that EV Ramasamy is listed among the great freedom fighters of this land. He who had said that August 15 was a black day, and that India would not be able to make a pin if the British left, does not deserve this honor.”
The organization further highlighted EVR’s controversial stance during the freedom struggle. “He did not believe in nationalism from the beginning and if he is included in the syllabus as the spark of national upheaval, it will enable students to read wrong histories,” the tweet continued.
EVR’s infamous resolution, where he suggested that even if India were granted freedom, the British should continue to rule from London and directly govern Chennai, was cited as a prime example of his anti-national sentiments. “It is condemnable that the name of EVR, who insulted freedom, is included in the list of elders who sacrificed their body, material, and spirit to get freedom for our nation,” the Hindu Munnani asserted.
