Former Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has strongly criticized the ruling DMK government for its failure to prevent a series of targeted robbery and murders occurring in and around the Kongu region, particularly in isolated farmhouses. He accused the government of being ineffective in both preventing these crimes and apprehending those responsible.
This sharp criticism follows a recent gruesome incident in Vilakethi, near Sivagiri in Erode district, on 1 May 2025. An elderly couple, Ramasamy (75) and Bhakiyammal (65), who lived alone in a farmhouse, were found murdered. The assailants also stole 12 sovereigns of gold jewellery from their home.
Their son, Kavishankar, who lives in Muthur, had been trying to reach them for two days without success. Growing concerned, he asked a relative to check on them. The relative visited their house around 7 p.m. on 1st May and discovered the couple’s decomposed bodies. The Sivagiri police were immediately notified.
Reacting to the incident, Annamalai took to social media to express his outrage and condemned the DMK government. He wrote, “The murder of an elderly couple living alone in a farmhouse near Sivagiri in Erode district is deeply shocking. These are disturbing pattern of murders targeting individuals living alone. In 2023, four members of the same family were hacked to death in the Palladam area. In November 2024, three people, a mother, father, and son were murdered in Semalaikavundampalayam, Tiruppur district. All these murders are taking place within a 50-kilometre radius, yet not a single suspect has been arrested so far. Has the Tamil Nadu police become dysfunctional? The public is gripped by fear, but the Chief Minister, who is in charge of the police, casually remarks in the Assembly that only a few crimes are occurring here and there. Are serial murders following a similar pattern just ‘here and there’? The DMK government has failed to stop these killings. It has been unable to apprehend the culprits. We have already called for all these cases to be transferred to the CBI. If the Chief Minister continues to cover this up, it means that there is no guarantee of public safety in Tamil Nadu.”
