Has India Today Started A Dedicated Tamil Channel To Promote Joseph Vijay?

The recent launch of India Today Tamil, a dedicated channel for Tamil audiences, has sparked intense debate over its editorial independence. From the surface, it seems as if the channel’s primary objective is to promote actor-turned-politician and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, rather than provide balanced journalism.

India Today Tamil was officially launched on 17 August 2026, with Vijay himself inaugurating the YouTube channel at the India Today Tamil Nadu Roundtable in Chennai. The event coincided with the completion of 100 days of the Vijay government, and Vijay was the chief guest and the first major political figure featured by the new platform.

The launch was therefore not a routine media rollout. It was tied directly to a high-profile event celebrating and examining the first 100 days of the newly elected TVK government.

India Today itself described the event as Vijay’s first media interaction since taking office. The significance is that the new Tamil platform was launched not independently of Vijay, but by Vijay himself at an event centred on his government’s first 100 days.

India Today itself described the event as Vijay’s first media interaction since taking office. The channel was launched by Vijay alongside India Today Group Vice Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief Kalli Purie.

Focus Solely On Vijay & TVK

A closer examination of the channel’s content reveals a significant focus on Vijay and his party, TVK. Posts prominently feature his official functions, such as the recent opening of the Mettur Dam, and statements from TVK MLAs, reports focusing primarily on the TVK government and highlighting statements of MLAs speculating about Vijay’s prime ministerial prospects for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Their cover picture itself is itself telling.

What is interesting is that, despite being a channel for the local audience, it is not reporting any other local news such as murders, law and order issues, or any other crime related news.

The entire focus is on Vijay.

It is noteworthy that India Today Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai met Joseph Vijay before the Assembly elections and its prominent anchor Akshita Nandagopal has been behaving like a fangirl of the TVK founder rather than a neutral reporter.

From 100 Days To A National PM Narrative

The more significant question concerns what followed.

Within days of its launch, India Today prominently pushed the Mood of the Nation survey’s finding that Vijay had emerged as the third-most preferred choice for Prime Minister, behind Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi.

India Today’s own video coverage described Vijay as entering the PM race with 9.2% support, compared with 48.7% for Modi and 27.1% for Rahul Gandhi. Another India Today report rounded Vijay’s figure to 9%.

The survey was commissioned by the India Today Group and conducted by CVoter. According to India Today, 25,184 people were directly surveyed between July 1 and 25 August 2026, while another 91,795 interviews from CVoter’s regular tracking surveys over the preceding six months were incorporated into the analysis.

The same survey also asked respondents who would be best suited to lead the Opposition alliance. Rahul Gandhi led with 29%, while Vijay came second with 12.2%, ahead of Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal and Akhilesh Yadav. The survey therefore did not merely place Vijay in the national Prime Ministerial conversation; it also positioned him as a potential national Opposition leader.

Vijay More Popular In Northeast Than South?

The regional breakup of the same survey raises an even more striking question. Vijay’s reported support was 18.5% in the Northeast, compared with 14.3% in the South. His all-India figure was 9.2%.

This means the survey puts Vijay’s support in the Northeast above that in the entire southern region, which includes his home state Tamil Nadu.

The result is unusual for a politician whose political base is entirely in Tamil Nadu. TVK has no significant organisational presence in the Northeast, and Vijay had only recently entered electoral politics. India Today presented the figures as evidence of his emerging national appeal. But such an unusual regional distribution also warrants scrutiny of the survey’s sampling and weighting.

There seems to be a rapid transition from Vijay launching a new media platform to the same media ecosystem presenting Vijay as a potential national leader. Within days of the August 17 launch, India Today was prominently projecting Vijay’s 9.2% PM preference, while India Today Tamil was amplifying the finding and subsequently discussing its political implications.

Has India Today Created The Channel To Promote Vijay?

The sequence of events and the way the news is being selectively reported is telling. Over the past week, multiple instances of gruesome murders, robberies, chain snatchings etc., have not even been picked up by this channel which claims to be a local news media.

Add to this the focus on the projection of Vijay as the PM candidate and a national leader.

India Today can very well cover politics and governmental updates in TN but solely focusing on one party and one agenda seems to indicate that the channel is meant only for promoting Vijay and creating a positive image and nothing else.
